Glossary
IP Address – This is a unique numeric code assigned to computers on the Internet. While many computers on the Internet have “domain names” (like “vwebr.net”) which correspond to an IP Address, almost all computers on the Internet get an actual IP Address (like “208.244.274.10”)Computers in offices and computer labs typically get a certain IP and keep it forever. Computers dialing in over a phone line to an ISP (an Internet Service Provider) typically get a different IP each time they connect. This is out of a pool of IP addresses the ISP has available. Finally, computers using large Internet services like AOL or WebTV are not assigned IP addresses. Instead, a large number of computers known as “Proxy Servers,” are used to do the actual Internet connection. For these users, their IP address often changes between one page and another.Cookies – A “cookie” is a small piece of information sent by a web server to store on a web browser so it can later be read back from that browser. This is useful for having the browser remember some specific information.Cookies can store database information, custom page settings, or just about anything that would make a site individual and customizable. As an analogy, cookies are similar to a “rain-check”. When you return, you pick up where you left off. nth per account limit on data transfers to and from a personal web page.
